Hunsaker Confirmed as Judge of Ninth Circuit… Avenatti Asks That State Bar Proceedings Be Put on Hold…Cooley, Kim Unopposed for Superior Court Seats |
With the Nov. 6 confirmation of Danielle J. Hunsaker by the Senate—on a vote of 73–17— there are no vacancies on the 29-judge court, but two are upcoming.
Judge Carlos Bea has said through a court spokesperson that he will take “senior status upon the nomination, confirmation and appointment of his successor.” Judge Jay S. Bybee has announced he will go on senior status Dec. 31.
Trump on Oct 15 named Patrick J. Bumatay, an assistant United States attorney for the Southern District of California and presently a nominee to the U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of California, to replace Bea and Lawrence VanDyke, a deputy assistant attorney general for the Environment and Natural Resources Division of the Department of Justice, to succeed Bybee. Both nominations were approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Nov. 21. |
There are nine vacancies. The latest was created July 5 when Judge Andrew J. Guilford went on senior status, and there is no nominee for his post.
The most recent nominations—on Nov. 21—were those of John W. Holcomb, a partner with Greenberg Gross in Costa Mesa, and Steve Kim, a U.S. magistrate judge on the District Court for the Central District of California. Holcolm would replace Judge Dean D. Pregerson, who took senior status, and Kim would succeed Judge Beverly Reid O’Connell died Oct. 8, 2017, at the age of 52.
Judge S. James Otero assumed senior status Dec. 30, 2018. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Fernando Aenlle-Rocha is the nominee for the office.
Judge Manuel Real, 95, assumed senior status on Nov. 4, 2018, after 52 years on the bench, and died June 26, 2019. Jenner & Block’s former Los Angeles managing partner Rick Lloyd Richmond is the president’s choice for the post.
Judge George H. King retired Jan. 6, 2017. Trump has nominated Mark C. Scarsi of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy to take King’s seat.
Judge Christina A. Snyder took senior status Nov. 23, 2016. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Sandy Leal has been nominate to succeed her
Judge Dean Pregerson took senior status Jan. 28, 2016. Judge Margaret Morrow took senior status Oct. 29, 2015, and subsequently left the bench to become president and chief executive of Public Counsel. The president has named Jeremy B. Rosen of Horvitz & Levy to replace Morrow. Judge Audrey B. Collins resigned Aug. 1, 2014 to join the state Court of Appeal for this district. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Stanley Blumenfeld has been nominated to succeed her. |

Serving as pro tems through the end of November are Los Angeles Superior Court Judges Mark K. Hanasono and Natalie Stone. Retired Orange Superior Court Judge Kim G. Dunning remains on assignment until she finishes her work on cases. |
There are 12 open seats. Two will not be on the March 3 ballot; Deputy District Attorneys Shannon Cooley and Lana Kim are unopposed.

Office No. 97: Sherry L. Powell, Deputy District Attorney, County of Los Angeles; Timothy D. Reuben, Attorney/Managing Partner.
Office No. 129: Kenneth M. Fuller, Deputy District Attorney, County of Los Angeles.
Office No. 131: Michelle Kelley, Deputy District Attorney, County of Los Angeles.
Office No. 145: Adan Montalban, Deputy District Attorney, County of Los Angeles; Troy Slaten, Attorney/Legal Commentator.
Office No. 150: Manuel Alejandro Almada, Deputy District Attorney, County of Los Angeles; Tom Parsekian.

Neither person who has taken out nominating papers for Office No. 42 has filed them. Six others have taken out petitions but not returned them, and one has filed a declaration of intent to run but has not taken out nominating papers. The deadline for returning nominating papers is Friday |
