Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Stephen Goorvitch and Mark Hanasono are under consideration for appointment to the Court of Appeal for this district, the METNEWS has learned.
Both were appointed to their present posts by then-Gov. Jerry Brown—Goorvitch in 2015 and Hanasono in 2013—and both are Democrats. Their names are being circulated for comment by the State Bar Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation.
Goorvitch was an assistant U.S. attorney for the Central District of California at the time of his appointment and, from 2003-07, was a member of the law firm of O’Melveny and Myers LLP.
His law degree is from the University of California at Berkeley.
Hanasono was a Los Angeles County deputy alternate public defender when tapped for the Superior Court, a position he held for nine years, and previously was a deputy public defender in the county.
He earned his law degree at Georgetown University.
The judge is currently sitting as a pro tem in Div. Three of this district’s Court of Appeal. His assignment there ends on Feb. 28.
There is a vacancy in that division created by the retirement of Justice Luis Lavin. All of the other seats in this district are filled.
