The union that represents approximately 800 Los Angeles County prosecutors announced yesterday that Michele Hanisee has stepped down as president after eight years on the job.
Hanisee will be taking on a new role in the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, serving as special assistant in charge of legislative affairs.
She was elected to serve as president of the Association of Deputy District Attorneys (“ADDA”) for five consecutive terms, including the four years headed by former District Attorney George Gascón—a period marked by discontent and litigation against the office by the ADDA. Hanisee was a vocal critic of Gascón, who was defeated in November in his reelection bid by Nathan Hochman.
Yesterday’s press release said:
“Michele’s tenure as President is marked by transformative achievements that elevated the ADDA’s profile and solidified its reputation as a trusted and influential labor organization in Southern California. Under her leadership, the ADDA established itself as a bipartisan authority on public policy and a compelling voice on issues affecting public safety.”
Incoming ADDA President Ryan Erlich credited her with being “instrumental in shaping the ADDA into a labor organization that has consistently fought above its weight class, advocating tirelessly for Deputy District Attorneys and the pursuit of justice.”
Vice President Amy Pentz also praised Hanisee, saying “Michele has been a trailblazer for our union, setting a standard for dedication, integrity, and vision” and “[h]er commitment to justice and to her colleagues has left an indelible mark on the ADDA and the community we serve.”
In her more than 20-year career as a prosecutor, Hanisee has prosecuted dozens of murderers and was assigned to the high-profile case involving the 2011 brutal beating of Bryan Stow, a San Francisco Giants fan, outside of Dodger Stadium.
