Court of Appeal Presiding Justice Brian S. Currey of this district’s Div. Four left the bench on Friday, the court said in a surprise announcement.
No reason was given for his previously unannounced departure, less than two years since he was elevated to his present post. The Commission on Judicial Appointments on July 10, 2023 confirmed the nomination of him by Gov. Gavin Newsom to succeed Presiding Justice Nora Manella, who retired.
He was appointed as an associate justice in Div. Three by then-Gov. Jerry Brown in 2018.
The court said in its announcement:
“Justice Currey’s remarkable career spans nearly three decades at O’Melveny & Myers LLP, where he litigated complex cases including the Exxon Valdez criminal case and the Vioxx products liability litigation. His commitment to public service led him to serve as Counsel to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and later as Deputy Mayor for Economic and Business Policy before being appointed to the Los Angeles County Superior Court in 2014.
“Throughout his career, Justice Currey has demonstrated an unwavering dedication to improving the legal profession.
As Chair of the California Civility Task Force, he has championed meaningful proposals to enhance civility in the practice of law. His service to the profession also includes roles on the California Judges Association Board and numerous other professional organizations.”
