Judge Richard Bloom to Leave Los Angeles Superior Court
By a MetNews Staff Writer
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Richard Bloom, 71, will cease presiding over cases next week after less than two years of service.
He was sworn in on Feb. 8, 2023 and his last day on the bench will be Jan. 17. After using earned vacation days, he will officially retire on Feb. 27.
Bloom, a Democrat, was a member of the state Assembly from 2012-22, representing a westside district that included Beverly Hills, Brentwood, Malibu, Santa Monica, and West Hollywood. He served on the Santa Monica City Council for 13 years before that, which included three terms as mayor.
From 2005-07, Bloom was executive director of the Levitt Quinn Family Law Center.
After declaring his candidacy for the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors on Jan. 5, 2022, he withdrew from the race on Feb. 1, saying in a prepared statement:
“After a great deal of thought and discussion with my family and advisors, I have decided to end my campaign for Supervisor and focus on serving my constituents for the remainder of my final term in the State Assembly.”
Bloom did not respond to a request for comment on the reason for his decision to retire early.
