Michael Avenatti Is Disbarred Following Felony Conviction

By a MetNews Staff Writer

Michael John Avenatti—once seen as having potential for being a major presidential contender—has been disbarred from law practice in the State of California.

The disbarment went into effect on Wednesday.

He was not stricken from the rolls of attorneys based on his 2022 conviction, pursuant to a guilty plea, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California on four counts of wire fraud and one count of endeavoring to obstruct the due administration of internal revenue laws. Rather, the loss of his bar license stems from State Bar charges instituted on July 29, 2019 related to his Feb. 14, 2019 conviction in the District Court for Southern District of New York.

That conviction entailed his effort to exact a sum of about $25 million from Nike by threatening to blacken its reputation in litigation if it did not comply.

The disbarment came in an order signed by California Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero on Jan. 6. It follows from his felony conviction being one involving moral turpitude and now being final.
