Passing the February bar exam were 1,337 applicants for admission as attorneys—33.9 percent of those taking the test—the State Bar of California has announced.
That was a slight increase in the success rate one year ago, with 32.5 percent passing the February 2023 exam. The success rate is typically lower for the February exam than that administered in July because a higher percentage of those taking the winter test—this year, 69.7 percent—previously attained insufficient scores.
As usual, a higher percentage of those who attended law schools accredited by the American Bar Association succeeded than those who didn’t. The State Bar provided this break-down:

The State Bar also said, late Friday, that 197 applicants—or 52.7 percent—passed the attorneys’ exam for those licensed to practice law elsewhere.
Consternation was expressed by those taking the exam at the Bay Area’s Cow Palace who encountered cold temperatures. State Bar Executive Director Leah Wilson commented:
“We can report that a full and independent psychometric analysis of the potential impacts of the Daly City exam site on applicant performance outcomes was conducted, and no such impact was found.”
She added that the exam next month will not be held there.
