Judge Sortino Leaves Bench

By a MetNews Staff Writer

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Douglas Sortino has hung up his judicial robe after 19 years on the bench.

His final day in his Pomona courtroom was last Friday and his official retirement date is Oct. 11.

The judge, sitting on assignment to Div. Eight of this district’s Court of Appeal, wrote for the majority in holding on July 11, 2017, that the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department need not disclose its Brady list absent compliance with Pitchess procedures. However, the California Supreme Court granted review and, on Aug. 26, 2019, reversed and remanded.

Sortino was appointed Dec. 8, 2005, by then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. He was, at the time, a 46-year-old deputy district attorney, serving as the prosecutor in the Phil Spector murder trial.

His law degree is from the University of California, Berkeley.

The judge was unavailable for comment.
