The U.S. Senate yesterday confirmed, by a vote of 49-47, President Joe Biden’s nomination of California State Bar Court Judge Cynthia Valenzuela Dixon to serve as a member of the District Court for the Central District of California.
Dixon was appointed by the California Supreme Court to serve as a judge for the State Bar Court in 2016 and was the supervising judge from 2020-22. From 2011-16, she acted as a Criminal Justice Act supervising attorney for the Central District.
She worked for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund from 2006-11, serving as the national vice president and director of litigation. Before that, the jurist was an assistant U.S. attorney from 2000 to 2006, where she received a special commendation award for dedication to victim’s rights.
Her law degree is from UCLA.
Upon taking her oath of office, Valenzuela will fill a vacancy created on Oct. 15 when Judge Philip S. Gutierrez assumed senior status. She will maintain chambers in Los Angeles.
One vacancy remains in the Central District. Biden on Nov. 18 nominated Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Serena Raquel Murillo to succeed Judge Cormac J. Carney who on May 31 assumed inactive senior status.
The Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing on the nomination on Nov. 20 but has not yet made a recommendation. Swift action is needed if Murillo is to be confirmed, as Republicans take control of the Senate on Jan. 3.
