Judges Keosian, Clover to Leave L.A. Superior Court

By a MetNews Staff Writer

Two Los Angeles Superior Court judges—Gregory Keosian and Suzette Clover—are leaving the bench this month.

Keosian will step down on Monday and will officially retire, after using earned vacation days, on May 15. Clover’s last day will be April 30 and will officially retire the same day as Keosian.

A 1986 graduate of the University of Western Los Angeles School of Law, Keosian was for one year an associate in the law firm of Scolinos, Slater, and Sweetman, then practiced in Encino with his father, for 14 years. He was appointed to the Los Angeles Superior Court by then-Gov. Gray Davis in 2002.

Clover received a law degree from UCLA in 1972. She was appointed to the bench by then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2006.

Her background includes service as an assistant U.S. attorney and practice as an associate in the law firm of Adams, Duque, and Hazeltine from 1982-87.

Keosian Comments

Keosian commented:

“As a new judge, my senior judges would often proclaim that being a Superior Court judge was the best job in the world. I can confirm that is truly the case.

“In what other profession can you on a daily basis, discuss novel legal issues, consider two contrary positions, and then attempt to fairly and justly decide a matter, or at least try to propose a practical yet meaningful resolution. As the saying goes, each new case creates a permanent enemy and a temporary friend. But we do our best to listen, apply the law and make findings, even when sometimes the result is not what we wish.”

Gained Knowledge Daily

He added:

“As judges, we truly learn something new every day, be it from counsel who argue before us, self-represented litigants, or Court of Appeal opinions. In entering the third phase of my career, I hope to continue to serve our legal community, using the experiences I have gained as a trial judge, in the resolution of disputes in a private forum.

“I will certainly miss my colleagues, who over the years have become like family, and with whom I’ve often consulted when there was no simple answer. On a lighter note, I look forward to reading something other than legal journals, briefs or case law, and hope to spend some time anywhere else but on a commute to DTLA.”

Clover is on vacation and was not able to comment.
