MYRLIN MIMMS

Deputy Federal Public Defender Susel Carrillo-Orellana of the Central District of California and Los Angeles County Deputy Public Defender Cornell Myrlin Mimms have been elected by judges of the Los Angeles Superior Court as court commissioners.

The result of balloting was announced Tuesday. The outcome was no surprise; they were next in order on the eligibility list prepared by a committee.

Votes were tallied by Judges Deborah L. Christian, Patti Jo McKay, and Alex Ricciardulli.

Carrillo-Orellana joined the Federal Public Defender’s Office in 2012, serving in the Habeas Unit until September of last year when she became director of recruitment, retention, and development. She previously served as a research attorney for the Los Angeles Superior Court (2007-12), as a staff attorney in the Public Counsel Law Center’s Children’s Rights Project (2005-07), and as a Fresno County deputy district attorney (2004-05).

Her law degree is from Columbia.

Mimms, whose law degree is from the University of Michigan, was admitted to practice in 2003 and went to work that year as an Amador County deputy public defender. He has been with the Los Angeles office since 2006.

Next on the eligibility list is Deputy Public Defender Mahin Salehi, followed by criminal defense lawyer Joel Koury, Los Angeles Superior Court Mental Health Hearing Referee Mary Melendrez, Los Angeles County Deputy Alternate Public Defender Heather Hocter, and Los Angeles County Deputy Public Defender Jennell Mimms.
