Private practitioner Sarah Ellenberg and Senior Deputy Los Angeles County Counsel Sumako McCallum have been elected by judges of the Los Angeles Superior Court as court commissioners.
The results of courtwide balloting were announced Tuesday night. The outcome was no surprise because Ellenberg was fourth on the list of eligible applicants, rated by a court selection committee, and McCallum was fifth, with the top three—Amanda Park, Sonia Dujan, and Amy Goldman—already having been elected.
In seeking election, Ellenberg, whose law degree is from New York University, told in a statement, disseminated to judges. of her background as a deputy public defender and alternate public defender before opening a law office in early 2020 providing “holistic legal services.” In light of the pandemic, that office was forced to close.
Ellenberg commented:
“Despite me tooting my own horn here. I think humility is one of the most desirable traits in a bench officer. If I were appointed as a Commissioner. I would aspire to the kind of openminded, always-learning, humble leadership that I see in the best of the bench.”
McCallum’s campaign statement to judges says:
“In her 23 years of practice, Ms. McCallum has developed legal acumen in a variety of practice areas through working for a preeminent law firm, a non-profit organization, and local government.”
She was a member of the firm of Morrison & Foerster in Los Angeles, followed by working at the Children’s Law Center of Los Angeles.
Her law degree is from UCLA.
