Nomination of Serena Murillo Forwarded to U.S. Senate
By a MetNews Staff Writer
President Joseph Biden yesterday forwarded to the Senate his nomination of Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Serena Murillo to the District Court for the Central District of California.
The nomination was announced on Oct. 23, while the Senate was in recess. That body reconvened at 3 p.m. yesterday.
If confirmed by the Senate—and there remains some possibility of that occurring before a new session begins Jan. 3—Murillo, a judge since 2015, would replace District Judge Cormac J. Carney of Santa Ana, who retired. Democrats outnumber Republicans in the Senate by two members.
Nominations of Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Anne Hwang and State Bar Court Judge Cynthia Valenzuela Dixon have been approved by the Senate Committee on the Judiciary and are awaiting action by the full Senate.
Biden yesterday also sent to the Senate his lame-duck nomination of Magistrate Judge Benjamin J. Cheeks of the District Court for the Southern District of California to a judgeship on that court.
