MARY MELENDREZ New court commissioner |
Mary Melendrez, a mental health hearing referee for the Los Angeles Superior Court, was elected by judges of the court as a commissioner, a survey of the ballots showed yesterday.
The Canvassing Committee was comprised of Judges Patti Jo McKay, Tony L. Richardson, and Barbara Scheper.
It was undoubted that the electronic balloting would be in Melendrez’s favor. She was next on the eligibility list compiled by a committee.
Following her on the list is Heather Hocter, who was a deputy alternate public defender. However, Hocter will be eliminated from consideration, having been appointed on Oct. 15 by Gov. Gavin Newsom to a judgeship on the court.
That means that Deputy Public Defender Jennell Mimms will be the next to be chosen as a commissioner, should there be an opening.
Melendrez’s resume, put before the judges, says:
“Throughout her legal career she has worked in a variety of legal fields, including criminal law. housing law and administrative hearings. These opportunities have afforded her the knowledge and understanding of the complexities in the different areas of law.”
It adds:
“As a Mental Health Hearing Referee, Mary conducts approximately fifteen to eighteen hearings daily. In her role, she strives to always exercise fairness, impartiality, and integrity in all decisions made.”
She received a juris doctorate from Abraham Lincoln Law School and was admitted to the State Bar in 2008.
