A deputy public defender has undertaken the near-impossible task of seeking to gain election to the Los Angeles Superior Court as a write-in candidate.

Natasha Khamashta is attempting to block Deputy District Attorney Victor Avila from taking office as a judge in January. He is the sole candidate for Office No. 93 listed on the March 5 ballot.

Khamashta filed nominating papers with the Office of Registrar-Recorder on Feb. 13.

On her campaign website, she declares:

“I am a United States citizen by birth, born in Bethlehem, Palestine, to an Arab Christian father and a Caucasian Christian American mother from Texas. I moved to Long Beach, CA, at the age of eight and have called Los Angeles my home for most of my life.

“For over two decades, I have tirelessly served our community as a deputy public defender. In the courtroom and beyond, I have fought with all my heart to protect the rights of the accused and to ensure justice is served. Though the work has often been challenging, I persevered because I believe that every person deserves competent legal counsel and fair treatment under the law.”

She goes on to say:

“Writing in any variation of my name on the ballot will be counted as a vote for democracy, for honesty, for upholding and respecting our Constitutional rights, the laws of our County, State and Country, and for the people our judicial system is meant to serve.”

Avila did not respond to a request for comment.
