By a MetNews Staff Writer
Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Friday the appointment of three persons to the Los Angeles Superior Court.
The governor chose Jeffery McFarland, a partner at Eisner LLP since 2023 and a former equity member of McKool Smith LLP, McDermott Will & Emery LLP, and Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan LLP. McFarland earned his law degree from the University of Utah and takes the seat previously occupied by retired Judge Donna Groman.
Safaan K. Ahmed, a graduate of Boston University School of Law, will fill the vacancy created by the elevation of then-Judge Natalie P. Stone to the Court of Appeal for this district. He has served as a Los Angeles County deputy district attorney since 2012 and worked as an attorney with the Long Beach City Prosecutor’s Office from 2009-12.
Succeeding Judge Mitchell L. Beckloff, who retired, is Michael Cavalluzzi. A solo practitioner since 2001, Cavalluzzi served as a Los Angeles County deputy public defender from 1997 to 2001 and was with Barry Bartholomew & Associates from 1993-97. Cavalluzzi earned a Juris Doctor degree from Southwestern Law School.
All three of the appointees are Democrats.
Newsom made eight other appointments to superior courts across the state. He selected judges for the counties of Fresno, Kern, Orange, San Bernardino, San Diego, and made one interim appointment in Santa Clara.
