The United States Senate yesterday confirmed, by a vote of 48-43. President Joe Biden’s nomination of Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Anne Hwang to serve as a member of the District Court for the Central District of California.

Hwang has been a Superior Court judge since 2019 following her appointment by then-Gov. Jerry Brown.  From 2006-18, she was a member of the Federal Public Defender’s Office in the Central District, holding the post of chief deputy at the time she was appointed to the bench.

She was a litigation associate at Irell & Manella from 2002-06 and also maintained an pro bono practice.

Her law degree is from USC.

Hwang fills a vacancy created in 2023 by Judge George H. Wu assuming senior status. Pending are the nominations of two others to the District Court for the Central District of California: Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Serena R. Murillo and State Bar Court Judge Cynthia Valenzuela Dixon. While Dixon’s nomination has been approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee, Murillo, who appeared before that body on Nov. 20, awaits a vote.

Murillo would replace Judge Cormac J. Carney, who has assumed inactive senior status, and Dixon would succeed Judge Philip S. Gutierrez, who is on senior status.

Confirmation, if it is to come, must take place by Jan. 3. Republicans will then take control of the Senate as the result of GOP victories on Nov. 5.
