Hochman Responds to Cooley Withdrawing Endorsement
By a MetNews Staff Writer
Nathan Hochman, a candidate for Los Angeles County district attorney in the Nov. 5 run-off, has responded to his loss of the endorsement by a recent holder of that office, Steve Cooley, who had been his mentor and most visible supporter in the effort to unseat incumbent George Gascón.
The rift is tied to Hochman’s declaration on Wednesday night, in an interview on a KTTV television newscast, that he is supporting Vice President Kamila Harris in her bid for election as president of the United States.
Hochman said Saturday:
“I have thanked Steve Cooley for his past support and for his steadfast position that D.A. George Gascón has enacted extreme pro-criminal policies that have decimated our public safety. Cooley could not be clearer in that regard.
“Though we are not in alignment on who should be the next president, we are in full alignment on the threat that four more years of Gascón as D.A. poses to our families’ and our community’s safety.”
Cooley retorted:
“The reason I withdrew my endorsement was not because ‘we are not in alignment on who should be the next president…’. He can vote for George Soros or Mickey Mouse for all I care.
“The reason was that on numerous occasions he promised that he ‘would be an independent D.A. and run a nonpartisan office.’ By endorsing Harris for president he violated that commitment and made an unprincipled decision.”
