Los Angeles Deputy Alternate Public Defender Mahin Salehi and criminal defense lawyer Joel Koury are expected to be elected by Los Angeles Superior Court judges as court commissioners, under electronic balloting that began yesterday.
Salehi and Koury are at the top of the eligibility list, ranked by a court committee.
Ballots are due by 4 p.m. on Aug. 26 and the results will be certified the following day by the three judges with the greatest seniority who are available.
The vacancies were created by the July 17 appointment of Tiffany W. Tai to a judgeship on the court and the July 18 death of Commissioner Frank Chen from cardiac arrest.
In a statement of qualifications, Salehi told judges:
“There are many obstacles that people face in the community, including within the legal system. It is important to me that I continue to serve my community by bringing humility, compassion, and wisdom to the bench.”
A statement says of Koury, a former federal deputy public defender for the Central District of California and former Los Angeles deputy public defender:
“To date, he has tried 159 jury trials in state and federal court, which includes 19 murder trials and two capital murder penalty trials.”
Koury and Salehi both earned their law degrees from Loyola.
