Governor Signs Bill Hiking Bar Dues
By a MetNews Staff Writer
Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed into law Assembly Bill 3279, the 2025 State Bar dues bill, setting the licensing fee for active members at $598, an $88 increase.
The State Bar had sought a $125 increase for active members but was turned down by legislators.
Inactive members will pay $22.60 more next year than this year.
Kern County Deputy District Attorney Brandon Stallings, chair of the State Board of Trustees, commented Friday:
“Approval of AB 3279 is a testament to the shared commitment of all three branches of government to the State Bar’s mission of public protection. This bill not only ensures that we have the necessary resources to continue our journey toward greater effectiveness, efficiency, self-sustainability, and accountability, but also challenges us to achieve those goals with a leaner team.”
He continued:
“While the fee increase is significant, it is only the second in a quarter century for an agency that in recent years has consistently pursued transformative reforms. We are grateful to our legislative partners, the governor, and our stakeholders for their collaborative efforts in getting the bill to the finish line.”
