1956-2023

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Beverly L. Bourne has died, the court announced yesterday.

Presiding Justice Samantha Jessner said of Bourne, who died Thursday:

“Those of us who were lucky enough to know her and work with her are aware that Beverly valiantly fought cancer for many years. Despite the challenges her cancer treatment presented, she never lost her wit, desire to serve the public, and will to live each day to the fullest. Beverly brightened every room she entered with her unfailingly cheerful disposition and her energy, grace, and kindness.”

Jessner continued:

“She inspired everyone she touched with her positive spirit and endless reservoir of empathy. She was tremendously dedicated to promoting diversity and helping the youth of our community through outreach programs. Beverly devoted herself to helping everyone around her. No matter how busy her calendar or how debilitating her treatment, Beverly never missed a Teen Court session or a Power Lunch.”

The presiding judge added:

“Beverly was a loyal and consummate friend to so many people. She was also a devoted and loving wife to her husband, John Carroll. Not coincidentally, her laughter was infectious and a joy to those around her.”

Bourne was appointed to the bench, at age 54, on July 12, 2013, by then-Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr.

At the time of her appointment, she was a senior trial attorney for the Los Angeles County Alternate Public Defender’s Office.

She moved to that office after serving as a deputy public defender.

Her law degree was from Pepperdine.
