The Senate yesterday, by a vote of 57-41, confirmed Orange Superior Court Judge Fred Slaughter as a judge of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
Appointed to the Superior Court by Gov. Jerry Brown, Slaughter took office on Jan, 31, 2014. At the time of the appointment, he was an assistant U.S. attorney.
Slaughter was a Los Angeles deputy city attorney from 2000-02 and a coordinator of the Project Safe Neighborhoods from 2004-06. His law degree is from UCLA.
President Joe Biden nominated Slaughter on Dec. 15—the same day he nominated Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett and Riverside Superior Court Judge Sunshine Suzanne Sykes. Their nominations were reported on favorably by the Senate Judiciary Committee and are pending before the full Senate.
Garnett is running for reelection in the June 7 primary and has drawn two opponents who say they expect her to be confirmed before the election.
The Senate yesterday also confirmed Magistrate Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley of the Northern District of California as a judge of that court. The vote was 63-36.
