Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr. yesterday made 33 Superior Court appointments, 15 of them in Los Angeles County, with three of the appointees being persons who were elected to the bench in the June primary.

All of the 15 appointees to the Los Angeles Superior Court are Democrats, except one: Deputy District Attorney Robert Serna, 45, a Republican. Statewide, the Democratic governor gave judgeships to four Republicans other than Serna and two who have no party affiliation.

Those who gained election in Los Angeles to terms starting in January, and will now get a head start, are State Bar Court Maria Lucy Armendariz, 48;  Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Danielle R.A. Gibbons, 44; and Principal Los Angeles Deputy County Counsel Rene C. Gilbertson, 51.

Brown bestowed judgeships on four Los Angeles Superior Court commissioners in addition to Gibbons: Diego H. Edber, 45; Brenda J. Penny, 72; Michelle S. Short, 55; and Timothy M. Weiner, 49.

The governor also appointed four government lawyers: Assistant U.S. Attorney Jill T. Feeney of the Central District of California, 52, deputy chief of the Major Frauds Section; Deputy District Attorney Carolina V. Lugo, 47; Deputy Alternate Public Defender Mario Barrera, 55; and Deputy Public Defender Michael R. Powell, 56.

Private practitioners who will go on the bench are Craig S. Barnes, 61, a partner at Clyde and Co, and Sabina A. Helton, 54, a shareholder at Buchalter APC.

Also chosen was Anne K. Richardson, 55, director of the Consumer Law Project at Public Counsel.

Brown filled three vacancies each in Riverside and Santa Clara counties, two each in El Dorado, Fresno and Merced counties, and one each in Glenn, San Diego, San Joaquin, Solano, Stanislaus, and Ventura counties.
