Vaino Spencer to Retire as Presiding Justice
By a MetNews Staff Writer
Court of Appeal Presiding Justice Vaino Spencer of this district’s Div. One, one of the longest-serving judges in California history, will retire Sept. 1, the MetNews learned Friday evening.
Spencer, 87, notified Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Judicial Retirement System that after 46 years on the bench—she was appointed to the Los Angeles Municipal Court by then-Gov. Pat Brown in 1961—of which the last 27 have been as presiding justice of Div. One, she has decided to step down.
The MetNews also learned that her two potential successors—Div. One Justices Miriam Vogel and Robert Mallano—were rated Friday by the State Bar Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation. The ratings themselves were not learned.
