Media Counsel Andrew J. Thomas Makes Partner in Los Angeles at Davis Wright Tremaine

Andrew J. Thomas, renowned for his work over the years with local media outlets, was named partner Friday at the downtown Los Angeles office of Davis Wright Tremaine.
Representing and counseling companies in First Amendment and intellectual property matters, Thomas has worked with newspapers and magazines, book authors and publishers, television broadcasters, and motion picture and television producers.
He has represented news outlets in defamation and libel cases and reporters subpoenaed to appear in court.
His clients include the Los Angeles Times, CBS, Fox, E! Entertainment and Warner Bros.
Last summer, Thomas said, he represented a group of Los Angeles newspapers and broadcasters demanding access under the public records law to Gov. Gray Davis’ billion dollar energy contracts and was successful in landing a court order guaranteeing access.
Also last year, Thomas said he and his firm successfully represented the producers of the television mini-series about the O.J. Simpson trial, aired on CBS, which Simpson had filed suit to stop.
On becoming one of 14 partners named nationwide by the firm last week in a slowing economy, Thomas said:
“It shows that the firm is confident enough in its future to elevate 14 people to partner. I’m glad to have the opportunity to continue working in this area, developing my practice in First Amendment areas.”
Thomas received his law degree from Harvard Law School and his interest in the media goes back to his days as a reporter and editor of The Stanford Daily.
He is a member of the American Bar Association First Amendment and Media Litigation Committee and the Libel Defense Resource Center.
The Los Angeles office of Davis, Wright Tremaine, which opened in 1989, focuses on communications and media law, and regulation of the telecommunications industry. The has more than 400 attorneys in its 10 offices nationwide.
