Carl, Paik Make Partner at Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton
By NICK YULICO, Staff Writer
Kenneth Carl and David Paik have been named partners at the Los Angeles office of Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton.
Carl has been at the firm three years as a member of the Finance and Bankruptcy practice group. A specialist in commercial lending and bankruptcy-related transactions, he has primarily represented banks and other lenders in million and billion dollar financial transactions.
His clients include Bank of America, Union Bank of California, CIT group, and CoBank, a large agricultural lender.
Carl’s 1986 article, “Fraudulent Transfer Attacks on Guaranties in Bankruptcy,” published in the American Bankruptcy Law Journal, has been cited by a number of bankruptcy courts and the Third U.S. District Court of Appeals.
Carl moved to Los Angeles 10 years ago and previously spent time in Chicago, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree and masters degree in economics from the University of Chicago. He obtained his law degree from Harvard Law School.
Carl said he was delighted to become partner at a firm with a long history in commercial law.
“One of the firm’s main partners, George Richter, was a draftsman of the Uniform Commercial Code,” Carl said. “I am pleased to be part of this tradition and look forward to continuing my banking and corporate practice in the firm’s finance and bankruptcy practice group.”
Another new partner at the Los Angeles office is David Paik, who practices with the Tax/Employee Benefits/Trusts and Estates practice group. His practice centers on employee benefits and executive compensation for companies spanning the gamut from large publicly traded ones to startups.
He has designed and implemented tax qualified retirement plans, nonqualified plans and welfare benefit plans for his clients.
Paik earned his law degree form Indiana University after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh.
Statewide, two other attorneys for the firm were named partners this week. Douglas Farmer, who exclusively represents management in employment law matters and related litigation, was named partner at the San Francisco office.
Linda Fox, a finance and bankruptcy attorney, got the nod at the San Diego office.
