O’Melveny & Meyers Attorney Chosen for Dana Latham Award

Los Angeles tax attorney Philip D. Irwin has been selected as the recipient of the Dana Latham Award for lifetime achievement in tax law, the Taxation Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association announced.

Irwin, currently of counsel in O’Melveny & Myers’ Los Angeles office, will be honored June 7 at the Section’s Annual Dana Latham Award luncheon at the Omni Los Angeles Hotel.

The Dana Latham Award was created by LACBA’s Taxation Section in 1976 to honor the memory of Dana Latham, commissioner of Internal Revenue under President Dwight D. Eisenhower and a former LACBA president. It is only awarded in years when the Executive Committee of the Taxation Section determines there is a leader of the Los Angeles tax bar who has made an outstanding contribution both to the community and to tax law.

Irwin concentrates his practice in the federal corporate tax area, with emphasis in the field of mergers and acquisitions.

Past chair of O’Melveny & Myers’ Tax Department, he worked with Apria Health Care on the merger involving Homedco and Abbey Health Care; Chase Manhattan on the spin-off/merger involving U. S. Trust; Dole, with that company’s spin-off of its Castle & Cooke real estate operations; and FHP International Corporation for its merger acquisition of TakeCare.  He also played critical role in advising Frezenius USA in its spin-off /merger transaction involving W. R. Grace; IDP Communications in its merger with LDDS Communications; International Lease Finance Corp. in its merger with American Insurance Group; Lockheed Corporation in its dual merger involving Martin Marietta; Security Pacific’s merger with Bank of America; and The TCW Group, Inc. in its acquisition by Société Generale, S.A.

Irwin first joined O’Melveny & Myers in 1957 as an associate in the Tax Department. He was elevated to partner in 1965 and he became of counsel in February 2000.

Irwin has served as a lecturer and writer for a variety organizations including the USC Institute on Federal Taxation, Southwestern Legal Foundation, Law & Business, Inc., Title Insurance and Tax Forum, LACBA, and the State Bar. He is also a member and former chair of the Planning Committee of the USC Tax Institute.

Irwin is certified as a Taxation Law Specialist by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization.

Irwin received his undergraduate degree in history from the University of Wyoming in 1954. He received his law degree from Stanford Law School where he also an editor of the Law Review and the recipient of the Order of the Coif.
