Senate Confirms More Bush Nominees for Federal Judgeships Around Nation

The U.S. Senate Friday confirmed two more of President Bush’s judicial nominees, the 76th and 77th judges to gain approval since the president took office.
Jose E. Martinez, a Miami attorney, was confirmed by voice vote as a U.S. district judge for the Southern District of Florida.. Martinez, 61, is a native of the Dominican Republic and holds undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Miami.
He was a Navy legal officer from 1965 to 1968 and an assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida from 1968 to 1970. He has worked for a succession of Miami firms for the past 32 years, except from 1972 to 1974, when he was regional director of the Department of Justice’s Office for Drug Abuse Law Enforcement.
Arthur J. Schwab, currently chief of complex litigation in the Pittsburgh office of the law firm Buchanan Ingersoll, was confirmed by a 92-0 vote as a U.S. district judge for the Western District of Pennsylvania.
Schwab, 55, is a graduate of Grove City College and the University of Virginia School of Law. He has practiced in the fields of trade secrets; confidential information; employment agreements, including covenants-not-to-compete and confidentiality agreements; software copyright infringement; trademark law, and unfair competition and diversion of corporate opportunities.
Friday’s confirmations followed on the heels of Thursday’s approval of Magistrate Judge Timothy J. Corrigan of Jacksonville, by a vote of 88-0, to serve as a judge of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida.
Corrigan, a graduate of Notre Dame University and Duke University School of Law, has been a magistrate judge since 1996. He previously spent 14 years at a Jacksonville firm, specializing in civil litigation.
