Board of Supervisors Votes to Name Courthouse for Antonovich
By a MetNews Staff Writer
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors yesterday agreed to name a new courthouse in Antelope Valley after one of its own, Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich.
The measure first came before the board two weeks ago but was held at the request of Supervisor Gloria Molina. The board yesterday approved the measure unanimously, without discussion.
The vote came on a request from Superior Court Executive Officer/Clerk John Clarke to rename nearly a dozen former municipal court buildings, and to designate the new court building in Lancaster the Michael D. Antonovich Antelope Valley Courthouse.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Frank Jackson brought the idea of naming the new courthouse for Antonovich to the Lancaster and Palmdale city councils, which both endorsed the plan and asked the board to support it.
The board Tuesday also called for an allocation of $500,000 to change signage on former municipal courthouses now named for now non-existent judicial districts, such as Citrus, Rio Hondo and Los Cerritos. Those courts will be renamed for their more precise geographic locations, such as West Covina, El Monte and Bellflower.
Superior Court buildings are owned by the county. In addition to the court, tenants in most buildings include the District Attorney’s Office, the Public Defender’s Office, and the Probation Department.
