Board Honors Outgoing Juvenile Presiding Judge Friedman
By a MetNews Staff Writer
The Board of Supervisors paid tribute yesterday to Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Terry Friedman, who will be leaving his post as presiding judge of the juvenile court on Jan. 1.
“We have been very fortunate to have his brand of judicial leadership on behalf of our kids,” Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky said.
Yaroslavsky’s comments were echoed by the rest of the board, which applauded Friedman for his adamant dedication to his work and the children in the court system.
“He operated as presiding judge as he did a legislator: with an unbelievable amount of passion,” Supervisor Gloria Molina said.
Friedman has spent his entire six and a half years on the bench in juvenile court. Before taking the bench, Friedman served as a state assemblyman from 1986 to 1994.
Friedman told the board that working hard to solve problems at the juvenile level will prevent the problems from extending into mainstream society.
“These are our kids,” Friedman said. “We need to look at them as our own kids.”
Beginning Jan. 1 Friedman will handle a civil calendar at the Santa Monica courthouse. Judge Michael Nash will take over as presiding judge of juvenile court.
